K I L L A R N E Y
A trip into the wilderness of mid-northern Ontario. My first experience with long-range canoeing, portaging and wilderness camping. Beauty that inspired the Group of Seven, which in turn inspired one of the members to have the region protected and laid the foundation for the park's creation. The meeting point of the Boreal Forest and the St Lawrence watershed, the meeting of two geographic formations, formerly high mountains run down by glaciers, clear water, clear skies and the full moon. In short, beauty. Chronicled below.
For the impressions of the trip, see here: My Killarney Blog Entry

The journey, the beauty
And so, the adventure begins, with a paddle in hand
An island in the midst of it all
Waterfalls along our first portage, an explosion of beauty
The water burbbles along its path
The morning at Murray Lake, with the mist rising...
~sing~ Guuuuulls... on the rooooock... just keeping watch
Like a mirror, calm, smooth, peaceful
Waterfalls along the second portage....
...poetry in motion
We set eyes on Nellie lake for the first time
The ridiculously blue waters of Nellie lake
The ridiculously clear waters of Nellie lake
The water, the sky, the land, merge into one on Nellie lake
Nature's colours shine
Evening splendour
Reality, and a watercolour painting of reality, in the water
Nellie lake from upon high
A perfect day on Nellie Lake
Rugged beauty
Our campsite on Nellie lake
Our wake-up view from our tent
Water's Edge at Grace lake
Panorama: Grace Lake (scroll if necessary)
The land, the trees, the water
The sky afire in colour...
...and again
The moon, our present companion in etherial light and beauty
Good Morning wilderness!
Waterfall along portage number four
Are we at trip's end already? The signs seem to say so
The crew, at trip's end!

On the night of the full moon we ascended a nearby cliff to take photos; the camera wasn't exactly up to the task of the low light conditions
However, what did come out and with some manipulation afterwords has a simple beauty of its own...
A look over the lake
A second look over the lake
The trees crowning the outcrop, against the starry sky
A third look over the lake
The moonlight shadows
Quartz-white rocks, aglow in the moonlight

It is, after all, now tradition for this pose at these kind of precarious places...
Ever wonder what I look like after a week of not shaving?
